DESCRIPTION:

Allopurinol

Allopurinol
is used to treat gout, high levels of uric acid in the body caused by certain cancer medications,
and kidney stones.

 Allopurinol is in a class of medications called xanthine oxidase inhibitors.

 It works by reducing the production of uric acid in the body. High levels of uric acid may cause gout attacks or kidney stones.

Gout {Subsequently the uric acid lowering capacity of allopurinol was noted, and the drug went on to be developed for its more famous use: to treat hyperuricemia (excess uric acid in blood plasma) and its complications.Allopurinol does not alleviate acute attacks of gout, and there is currently controversy over the issue of whether it can actually make acute gout attacks worse initially, but is useful in chronic gout to prevent future attack}

Allopurinol is used to prevent gout attacks, not to treat them once they occur.

DOSAGE:( CONSULT DOCTOR BEFORE TAKING ANY MEDICINE) **

The average dose of Urid is 200 to 300 mg/day for patients with mild gout and 400 to 600 mg/day for
those with moderately severe gout.

The appropriate dosage may be administered in divided doses or as a single equivalent dose with the 300
mg-tablet.

It should also be noted that Urid is generally better tolerated if taken following meals. A fluid intake
sufficient to yield a daily urinary output of at least 2 liters and the maintenance of a neutral or, preferably,
slightly alkaline urine are desirable.
Allopurinol is usually taken once or twice a day, preferably after a meal
